What Is a Business Name?

A business name is the name or title under which a person or company conducts business operations.

If you’re a sole trader not operating under your own personal name, or if your company isn’t using its registered company name, you need to register a business name.

When registering a business name, you have the option of a one-year or a three-year registration. After it expires, you’ll need to renew it annually with the government. Be sure to consider what’s involved in maintaining a business name—such as the costs, whether the name is already in use, and the procedures for transferring or cancelling the name if needed.
